Comments: Google Talk: It's great but..

Not true, I don't think. Although I can't say I know 100% what kind of computer all my buddies use.

I've added numerous people to my Jabber client, both on Mac and PC. If they don't already have a GMail account, yes you have to go to Gmail and invite them to get GMail, but that would apply to anyone, PC or Mac.

Once you know their Gmail email address, I just added them in my Jabber buddy list.

There was a little bug where even after they "accepted" their name was still marked with a "Waiting for Authorization" message, but that did not, in fact, impede us from chatting away.

But that "Waiting for Auth" message is the only problem I've had.

If the contact already has a gmail account, then you should be able to invite from your mac client with no problems.

If the contact does not have a gmail account, then send the contact an invitation from gmail. The invite box is at the bottom of the left column in gmail. Once the contact has an account, then you should be able to invite from your mac application.

cool! so if that's the case, how do i invite using Adium, and why isn't this on the google help pages.. for each of the mac clients under the invite area? we checked there, and then each of us went through the adium interface and couldn't find anything like inviting or adding someone. but we'll look again. if you have the answer, please let me know.

Adium > Contact > Add Contact

Adium > File > New Chat

These can merely be used to add buddies to your contact list and chat with someone who's not on your buddy list. To do the whole GMail invite thing, just direct them to http://gmail.com/ and have them create an account there. Unless I'm missing something here...
